I can understand misspelling there, they're, and their every once in a while, especially when the spell checker misses them, but to misspell words that can be checked, frankly, is laziness, and it drives me up the wall.

Precisely. If they don't care enough to spell simple place names correctly, why should I care enough to read their stories? I can understand the occasional mistake with homophones. It annoys me (grammar geek), but I understand it. But they should at least get the obvious things right. Sheesh.

Heh, true. Considering that there's already at least one RPS community for it, I have no doubt there are lots of potential Troy-writers chomping at the bit. Heck, if I wrote fic, I'd be one of them.

As regards Caribbean, I find it helps to think of it as "Pirates of the Carib Bean" smushed together. But maybe the average fangirl doesn't know what carib beans are.
