"Jackpot" and "Our Sons and Daughters"

I briefly had a mad passion for "Fade Into You," back when it was shiny and new. Seriously, insane love for that song. So WaT using it was even more exciting than the not-Tears for Fears version of "Mad World" back in... oh, what was it, "The Bus"? Other than that, though,
Jackpot
Or, "Gil vs. the hillbillies." What was with the people in this town? Did they never hear of playing it cool? The way to deflect suspicion is not to walk around holding up big neon signs saying "I HAVE SOMETHING TO HIDE!" Nice to see Henry Czerny, but I wanted to shake his character. Sheesh. And how ooky would it be to catch your major crush with your father? Not that I'd advocate responding by murdering said crush (or father), of course, but still, ooky.
Anyway. I'm liking this goofier Gil. When he says he's trying to change, he's not kidding. Making dirty jokes to Albert? Getting tickets to Celine for David (which is simultaneously sweet, bizarre, and horrible. Oh David. Celine? Is Sara a closet Celine fan and you're just trying to be a good date? Because that would make it okay-ish)? Teasing "the wife" on the phone? Cute, very cute. And also mean, to leave poor Catherine with all that paperwork- I'm glad she didn't do it. So there, Gil, ya bum. It was interesting to see him getting jumpier as the unwelcoming vibes worked on him- I never thought I'd see Gil napping with his gun, and he doesn't generally wear his vest that often (certainly not as often as perenial victim Nick). It must have been kind of fun for him to use all those basic, low-tech skills and methods that he doesn't need to rely on very often, though. Flexing those rarely-used muscles and all.
So Cat and Warrick were holding down the fort (and were stuck with Hodges- why so much Hodges this season? Stop it, PTB) and Gil was in the boonies (northern Nevada is very pretty if it actually looks like that). Everyone else? David and Sara were at Celine's screechfest, of course, and Nick was off hang-gliding with Archie because Greg had to work. Poor Greg. And he was doing Archie's job, no less, tracking down Dead Roommate's IMs. Oh well, Nick will make it up to him, no doubt. I like my world.
Weird episode. Not bad, pretty fun actually, but weird.
Our Sons and Daughters
So this was originally supposed to be shown with the CSI furries, huh? That would have been an interesting double bill. I don't know about anyone else, but high school sure wasn't like that for me. I think I would remember orgies. Interesting town.
When we saw the first scene of Ethan and Alex bonding over anime, I said, "Alex is in love with him." And he was. How sad. Messed-up kid, that one. He holds orgies that he doesn't participate in, he watches Ethan fall for some girl and needs to get rid of her but does it cruelly, he doesn't stop to think that Ethan won't thank him for that because he wants Ethan back so badly... Alex wasn't that likable, but I felt bad for him anyway. Just... his expression when Ethan told him they were through, and the wobble in his voice when he told Martin that he didn't want to lose Ethan... poor kid. I don't think there's a happy ending in store for Alex, particularly now with Ethan gone. With no anchor of any sort anymore? Yeah, I don't have high hopes for him.
I wonder why Martin always interrogated Alex alone. Didn't want Danny to scare him off? Hm. I do like seeing Martin in scenes with well-off, isolated, unhappy young men, though. The possibilities always interest me. If the cards had fallen slightly differently, or if he'd taken a few different steps, could Martin have been Andy Deaver, the lonely, dorky, vulnerable victim? Or Josh Abrams, the idealist gone badly astray? Or nihilistic, desperate, doomed Alex Durfee? On the surface, his youth probably wasn't that different from theirs, thanks to similarities of class, education and the "gift" of parentage. What does he think when he looks at a kid like Andy or Alex?
I liked Sam's rapport with Jennifer, and Viv's reaction when Sam told Jennifer's mom that she hadn't been raped was interesting. They definitely hadn't discussed that particular approach beforehand. But the mom's attention has definitely been gotten now, so Sam accomplished her goal. Interesting scene for her, really.
Fashion report- Martin's hair looked like it had been cut again, unfortunately, and Danny's as well. Not good for either of them. But Viv's was quite pretty down and loose- different look for her, and probably less practical, but flattering. Sam's clothes were better than usual- I like the colors she usually wears, but not the cut of her shirts. The all-black outfit was a little better, style-wise. The not-very attractive brown suit on Martin was switched to a slightly better blue one halfway through- normally I like him in brown, but not that particular suit. Or tie. I was amused to see his Checked Shirt of Doom back. Actually, as much as I pick on the clothes, I do appreciate seeing the same outfits more than once, rather than having the Fibbie equivalent of Buffy's Magical Closet. And speaking of Danny's stripy red shirt and tie combo, well, let's not. Thinking about it will warp my happy Mazzy Star memories. I wish I still had that CD. I think I sold it in college. Darn.

Date: 2003-11-07 06:42 am (UTC)Hee. I don't recall any orgies in my town during high school. Nor in college, for that matter. Kids these days, sheesh.
When we saw the first scene of Ethan and Alex bonding over anime, I said, "Alex is in love with him."
Me too. It was so very obvious. All that posturing about getting laid, when he was probably secretly glad Ethan was still a virgin.
I don't think there's a happy ending in store for Alex, particularly now with Ethan gone. With no anchor of any sort anymore? Yeah, I don't have high hopes for him.
I agree. After the revelation of how he tried to get rid of the girlfriend, I wasn't liking him much, but when he made that broken confession about not wanting to lose Ethan, I really felt for him. Poor thing. I was sorry we didn't get to see his reaction to hearing Ethan was dead. I don't see things turning out too happily for him either.
God, I was so disappointed that Martin cut his hair again. It doesn't suit him at all. Mr. Close? I know you might want to go as short as possible after playing Vin and having all that hair, but really, stop buzzing!
Checked Shirt of Doom, Buffy's Magical Closet...hee!

Date: 2003-11-07 08:28 am (UTC)No kidding! And how did they find the time? "Sorry I don't have my paper finished. We were having an orgy." Weird town.

Yeah. What a mess. He was an annoying brat, but he was an annoying brat who was bleeding to death. Broken hearts get to me; I'm a sap. Poor, lost kid. And ITA on the posturing about sex thing. Such a teen guy coping mechanism to use. Argh, now I'm all depressed. :(

Hee! I'm picturing him sitting there saying "bzzzzzzzzzzzzzz" to himself... But yeah, exactly! Someone take away that man's razor! (And give one to Enrique the Stubble Man while you're at it!)

Date: 2003-11-07 07:35 am (UTC)In theory, that was not all that far from Lake Tahoe, which is even more gorgeous, being high in the Sierras. In fact, that was likely shot not far from where the fires hit last week -- up near Big Bear which is where Hollywood usually goes for mountains. :-) Another very pretty place.
I somehow was very uncomfortable with Martin's interrogation of Alex. It just felt "off" somehow, and I kept expecting it to be a good cop/bad cop thing with the other person about to walk in. None of them seemed to have much to do as if the show was about the orgies more than our characters. Not inherently a bad thing, but it's not why I watch the show.
CSI was fun. I sure hope Catherine doesn't hang onto that check, under the circumstances. No way it doesn't look like a payoff for what she did to the evidence that got her father off, even if that wasn't her intent. And I too loved seeing Czerny as the sheriff. Have you seen his "Taming of the Shrew" with Scott Wentworth and ... the lead from Forever Knight? I have a multi-generation down dub of the performance at Stratford, north of you.
But disliked only one Greg scene. I missed him!

It did feel odd, and I'm not sure why. My Martin!brain, which desperately wants more info on his younger years, wants the reason to be something along the lines of overidentification/nonidentification with Alex. But I'm not sure that it's just not the lack of the give and take he normally has with Danny in those scenes. I don't think we've seen Martin run an interrogation on his own before, have we? We've seen Jack work solo, but not the Young Turks, as far as I know, and I kept waiting for Danny to wander in. And overall the balance between the characters and the case seemed off, like the team was in danger of fading into the background or being replaced with the cast of another show or something. I can barely even remember what any of them did except Martin (and to a lesser extent Sam), and it's only been a couple of hours. Strange feeling.

I sure hope not. I was yelling at her to tear it up, or talk to Gil about it, or something. Anything except keep it. I know she needs the money, but there's no way she can keep that particular money without wrecking everything.
And I too loved seeing Czerny as the sheriff. Have you seen his "Taming of the Shrew" with Scott Wentworth and ... the lead from Forever Knight? I have a multi-generation down dub of the performance at Stratford, north of you.
Geraint Wyn Davies? I'm jealous, I've never seen it! Who plays what? Man, what a fun cast that would be. Straford is such a great festival. They get everyone, sometimes in some pretty odd roles.
Definitely not enough Greg. So much for him having more screentime this year because of the whole wanting to be a CSI thing. Cheaters, giving us Hodges instead is just not fair.
Taming of the Shrew
Date: 2003-11-08 10:43 am (UTC)That's him. I've only seen this bad dub of it, but love it. How about next time I sent you tapes I include it? I think it had Colm Fiore as Petruchio, and of course Wyn Davies was one of Bianca's suitors, as was Czerny. I think Scott Wentworth played Czerny's chauffeur/manservant, the one he changed places with.
Anyway, I've only watched it once, and am unlikely to watch it again to be honest. Be happy to send it to you later this month with the next Kim Possible tape(s). Disney's doing another marathon, you see, plus airing a KP movie. Not sure whether it's the one out on DVD or not.

Date: 2003-11-07 02:35 pm (UTC)It was both very obvious and very sad. This ep made you feel bad for pretty much everyone.
Martin got some good scenes. He has really nice eyes, which for some reason I never noticed before.
Do you remember what town it took place in?
(no subject)
Date: 2003-11-08 12:57 am (UTC)It did. Bleak, bleak episode. I mean, how damaged are these kids to have started this in the first place, and even more so now, as a result? And Ethan's dead, his parents are bereft, Jennifer and Alex are alone and more messed-up than ever, the sheriff is a killer inadverdantly... not a cheerful hour of television. Though Martin does have very pretty eyes, you're right. Helps makes up for the hair. *g*
I missed the name of the town, if they gave it, and I didn't tape this one yet (I'm waiting to catch them on the rerun, don't ask me why). It should be in the transcript at Anthology (http://www.webphilia.com/~anthology/wnp.html), when they get it posted, though.

Date: 2003-11-07 02:59 pm (UTC)Thanks for asking for me, puff!!
I missed the first few minutes, but other clues (the mention of White Plains--is that where Ethan went to find a clinic? And I swear I saw "Putnam County" written on a door in the Sheriff's Office somewhere) including the "rustic suburbia" look makes me think they were placing it somewhere north of Westchester. So, did they name the town?
I've been tracking such stuff since the use of Armonk, NY in the season opener. They got some things right, and a lot wrong about life in that town.

Date: 2003-11-08 01:46 am (UTC)Yes, I'm originally from the heart of suburbia, born and raised in Westchester Co. (Mount Kisco, to be exact, two towns north of Sean Maher's hometown of Pleasantville!) But we've been residents of the lovely Mohawk Valley for over 20 years now (after a brief stint on the prairies on North Dakota).

Date: 2003-11-08 04:04 am (UTC)And neat! One of my roommates at college was from Katonah, which isn't that far from there either. And the Mohawk Valley is gorgeous- we used to drive through there several times a year when I was a kid, on the way to visit my grandparents in Boston. Really beautiful scenery.
