"Jackpot" and "Our Sons and Daughters"

ealgyldenI briefly had a mad passion for "Fade Into You," back when it was shiny and new. Seriously, insane love for that song. So WaT using it was even more exciting than the not-Tears for Fears version of "Mad World" back in... oh, what was it, "The Bus"? Other than that, though,

Or, "Gil vs. the hillbillies." What was with the people in this town? Did they never hear of playing it cool? The way to deflect suspicion is not to walk around holding up big neon signs saying "I HAVE SOMETHING TO HIDE!" Nice to see Henry Czerny, but I wanted to shake his character. Sheesh. And how ooky would it be to catch your major crush with your father? Not that I'd advocate responding by murdering said crush (or father), of course, but still, ooky.
Anyway. I'm liking this goofier Gil. When he says he's trying to change, he's not kidding. Making dirty jokes to Albert? Getting tickets to Celine for David (which is simultaneously sweet, bizarre, and horrible. Oh David. Celine? Is Sara a closet Celine fan and you're just trying to be a good date? Because that would make it okay-ish)? Teasing "the wife" on the phone? Cute, very cute. And also mean, to leave poor Catherine with all that paperwork- I'm glad she didn't do it. So there, Gil, ya bum. It was interesting to see him getting jumpier as the unwelcoming vibes worked on him- I never thought I'd see Gil napping with his gun, and he doesn't generally wear his vest that often (certainly not as often as perenial victim Nick). It must have been kind of fun for him to use all those basic, low-tech skills and methods that he doesn't need to rely on very often, though. Flexing those rarely-used muscles and all.
So Cat and Warrick were holding down the fort (and were stuck with Hodges- why so much Hodges this season? Stop it, PTB) and Gil was in the boonies (northern Nevada is very pretty if it actually looks like that). Everyone else? David and Sara were at Celine's screechfest, of course, and Nick was off hang-gliding with Archie because Greg had to work. Poor Greg. And he was doing Archie's job, no less, tracking down Dead Roommate's IMs. Oh well, Nick will make it up to him, no doubt. I like my world.
Weird episode. Not bad, pretty fun actually, but weird.

So this was originally supposed to be shown with the CSI furries, huh? That would have been an interesting double bill. I don't know about anyone else, but high school sure wasn't like that for me. I think I would remember orgies. Interesting town.
When we saw the first scene of Ethan and Alex bonding over anime, I said, "Alex is in love with him." And he was. How sad. Messed-up kid, that one. He holds orgies that he doesn't participate in, he watches Ethan fall for some girl and needs to get rid of her but does it cruelly, he doesn't stop to think that Ethan won't thank him for that because he wants Ethan back so badly... Alex wasn't that likable, but I felt bad for him anyway. Just... his expression when Ethan told him they were through, and the wobble in his voice when he told Martin that he didn't want to lose Ethan... poor kid. I don't think there's a happy ending in store for Alex, particularly now with Ethan gone. With no anchor of any sort anymore? Yeah, I don't have high hopes for him.
I wonder why Martin always interrogated Alex alone. Didn't want Danny to scare him off? Hm. I do like seeing Martin in scenes with well-off, isolated, unhappy young men, though. The possibilities always interest me. If the cards had fallen slightly differently, or if he'd taken a few different steps, could Martin have been Andy Deaver, the lonely, dorky, vulnerable victim? Or Josh Abrams, the idealist gone badly astray? Or nihilistic, desperate, doomed Alex Durfee? On the surface, his youth probably wasn't that different from theirs, thanks to similarities of class, education and the "gift" of parentage. What does he think when he looks at a kid like Andy or Alex?
I liked Sam's rapport with Jennifer, and Viv's reaction when Sam told Jennifer's mom that she hadn't been raped was interesting. They definitely hadn't discussed that particular approach beforehand. But the mom's attention has definitely been gotten now, so Sam accomplished her goal. Interesting scene for her, really.
Fashion report- Martin's hair looked like it had been cut again, unfortunately, and Danny's as well. Not good for either of them. But Viv's was quite pretty down and loose- different look for her, and probably less practical, but flattering. Sam's clothes were better than usual- I like the colors she usually wears, but not the cut of her shirts. The all-black outfit was a little better, style-wise. The not-very attractive brown suit on Martin was switched to a slightly better blue one halfway through- normally I like him in brown, but not that particular suit. Or tie. I was amused to see his Checked Shirt of Doom back. Actually, as much as I pick on the clothes, I do appreciate seeing the same outfits more than once, rather than having the Fibbie equivalent of Buffy's Magical Closet. And speaking of Danny's stripy red shirt and tie combo, well, let's not. Thinking about it will warp my happy Mazzy Star memories. I wish I still had that CD. I think I sold it in college. Darn.
