Happy Birthday, Canada!

and Happy Birthday, Dominic Keating, too!

Normally I would celebrate by watching something Dominic filmed in Canada, but the only thing I have is The Immortal, and I can't go through that pain again just yet. Actually, wait, I think Love Street may have been filmed in Vancouver... "Happy Canada Day! I'm watching porn to celebrate!" Er, no. Maybe I'll just read Enterprise fic while pining for Toronto (yummy restaurants... bookstores... theaters and museums and sushi as far as the eye can see... whimper). That seems festive, doesn't it?

Forgot some stuff- An old Salon article on Holiday, in the hopes that if you haven't seen it, you'll give it a try. It really is a wonderful movie, even if you aren't a Katherine Hepburn/Cary Grant cultist like I am.

And the Johnny Depp quiz (from [livejournal.com profile] sffan) which is a big pic, so I'll cut it )
I'm posting it at all mostly because I know my mother reads this (hi mom!), and she likes to take these quizzies. There's no way I could take that and not cheat, because I know his movies too well, so I totally cheated. Fitting, considering Corso's shaky scruples. I loved that movie right up until the last act, which went all to hell (badump ching!). It was different than the book, of course, but it kept a good bit of that Perez-Reverte decadence, decay and pulpiness I love so much. And Johnny was great (nice looking too)- I've always had a weakness for him, yeah, but he did a wonderful job even without my myopic, rosy vision. Plus, Frank Langella. I'm pretty much convinced at this point that he is Satan, and he's just moonlighting as an actor because he's bored.

In honor of Canada Day, from Matt Rogers of PopMatters, in this amusing CD review:

"I owe my ability to sing the Canadian National Anthem to the advent of cable television, specifically to ESPN when in 1985 they brought the NHL into my California living room. As one might surmise, hockey didn't rank high on the outdoor sports list where the water never froze except in those towns in the mountains where people skied anyway. So as a teenage boy, the discovery of a sport where tooth-gapped men wearing funny shorts over long underwear chased each other on metal blades, whacking each other with wooden sticks while slapping around a seriously solid piece of rubber on a seriously solid piece of ice, well, that was hella cool. And so were those guys with the funny accents, who had their own song to sing before the opening face-off. And so it was this song I learned while I fantasized about one day being that lucky silent hero whose job was to smooth the crystal-like surface with his trustworthy zamboni."

and last spam of the day, I promise. Not to mention, a golden opportunity to dispel any wacky ideas out there that I might have a modicum of taste or intelligence. Ah well, I'll be happier without my pride, I'm sure.

I'm trying to collect links to fanfic set in pirate AUs (don't ask why, just go with it). Any fandom**, whether or not the stories are any good. Actually, I'd assume "good" stories would be vastly outweighed by "trashy purple prose with off-kilter characterization"- pirates often have that affect (not always, put down the torches and hay rakes). Does anyone know of any pirate fic they could throw my way? Remember, bad is good- I won't mock you for "recommending" a lousy story. If all a certain story seems to be wanting is a score by Korngold and maybe a cameo by Basil Rathbone, it's what I'm looking for.

So far I only have two, a Mag7 story, A Pirate's Heart (Chris as Errol Flynn, sort of, and poor Ezra as his lovely Olivia de Havilland), and a Highlander story, Brought to Heel: A Codpiece Ripper (pirate Methos tames captive Duncan. yee haw). But I know there are more out there. Help?

** Okay, any fandom except Pirates of the Caribbean. Yes, I'm looking forward to it with an embarrassing amount of enthusiasm, but it just seems weird to me that there's already fic out there and it hasn't even opened yet. Besides, that's too easy. Pirate AUs of non-pirate universes only, por favor. Well, I guess I can stretch it to include highwaymen, privateers, and other exceedingly swashbuckling types, but mostly pirates.

Speaking of pirates, I nicked this from [livejournal.com profile] skripka: yet another quizzie )
