Action figure squeeing again
Jan. 22nd, 2004 09:10 pmHuzzah for the mailman, he who brings me toys! (Oops, sorry,
caras_galadhon, another AF post. Temptity tempt tempt... Mwa ha ha! *g*). My Pippin in Armor and Haradrim Archer finally arrived, in their annoying square packaging (sure, they take up less room than the curved boxes Toy Biz used for the previous LotR lines, but now they don't match the rest. And yes, I am that obsessive. Easily). Pip's the same facial sculpt as the earlier versions, as far as I can tell, which means it's okay but not great- doesn't quite look like Billy, but at least it's better than any of the Aragorn figures (which are actually figures of Aragorn's halfwit cousin who likes setting fires, I think). Same leper-feet that all the earlier hobbit figs have had, too. His outfit, though, is very nicely done, with all the right details: the White Tree and a sort of leafy pattern at the bottom hem of his jerkin neatly picked out in metallic paint, the conehead Gondorian helmet, wee vambraces that, from what I can see of them, remind me of Boromir's (I haven't opened the package yet- he'd only get lonely, since Merry in Armor doesn't come out until March). Not one of the most stunning figures in the line, but a good one nonetheless.
The Haradrim figure, though? So, so cool. He's just a step below the gorgeous Easterling figure as my favorite non-character model (nothing will ever beat that Easterling). The best thing about the extra figs is that, since Toy Biz has been so happily obsessive about getting their details right, you get a chance to look at the costuming and weaponry in 3-D. Again, cool. Bob of Harad has a bow nearly as tall as he is with snazzy Xena-eque bone spurs on it, and a loooong sword with a blade that's serrated right before the hilt. Nasty. His armor's not that practical, maybe, but when you're riding an oliphaunt, what does it matter if you're wearing "wicker armor courtesy of Pier One"? Anyway, he has a woven-looking breastplate thing with spikes and mirrors and odd stabby things on it, for a weird-but-yikes overall effect, and a grass skirt thing that's probably made of leather in the film. It sounds strange and goofy, but it looks great. It looks right. Veddy cool. But the best part? Face paint. He's all wrapped up in a turban so almost none of his face is showing, but the part that does has silver eyeshadow and a stripe down his nose. Really neat.
As far as I can tell, the new Boromir and Arwen figs are the same sculpts that originally came as Boromir/Lurtz and Arwen/Asfaloth, which means I don't need to get them again. Silly Toy Biz, missing out on that opportunity. So that means I'm out of temptations until March, when Merry and Faramir will be released. Plenty of time to win the lottery, right?

*dies* Yes! God, the Aragorn figures are scary. Especially the 6" one that's more of a doll, with a soft face, and looks nothing like Viggo. Poor guy must've made a terrible mold.
