Action on DVD! Well, maybe...

Columbia TriStar is considering releasing Action, the 1999 show staring SNL alum Jay Mohr as sleezy producer Peter Dragon. The show was initially intended to air on cable, and when Fox picked the show up the language had to be censored. Going up against Seinfeld, the show didn't stand a chance and was quickly cancelled after only 8 airings. With 5 episodes left unaired, cable channel FX picked it up to finish things off.

The show would make an excellent candidate for DVD. Most people haven't seen the last 5 episodes, and the DVDs could feature an unedited audio track. Hopefully there's enough demand to justify the studio releasing the show to DVD.


Honestly, not much to go on there, but "is considering releasing" is better to hear than "has forgotten the show ever existed," so I'm choosing to be optimistic. It'll happen, it will! And then we'll get Invisible Man, and Brimstone, and Brisco County, and Cupid, and...

And my mom just walked through the door and handed me a copy of Time with a scowling Russell on the cover. Yay, M&C article! I love my mom!

Goodness, that comes as a terrible shock. Oh yes, very shocking.


As usual, any answer that requires me to pick a favorite is subject to multiple sudden changes. These might not be my FAVORITE at all times, but they're always favorites.

1) What is your favorite science fiction film?

Stargate (oh shuddup). Or Ghostbusters, if that counts. Yeah, it should count.

2) What is your favorite, if you have one, chick flick?

While You Were Sleeping.

3) What is your favorite buddy film?

The Sting. Or Ghostbusters again, if you're willing to genre-bend a little.

4) What is your favorite B movie -- you know it isn't good, but you adore it anyway?

Gun Crazy, although I'd argue about the "isn't good" part. But it is, literally, a B movie, or was when it came out (in 1950). Or just about anything done on MST3K.

5) What is your favorite lame film? For this purpose lame is defined as: a film that would have been good except for one nagging thing, i.e. it was well acted and written but it was a cliched plot or it was a good film, but it came out at the wrong time for it so it didn't work.

The Rocketeer. Great film, good-looking, fairly clever and lots of fun, but it was poorly timed, poorly marketed, poorly managed, and sank like a very expensive stone. What a shame.

Hi. Me again. Sigh. I loved Action. That be awesome if they put it on DVD and Cupid, definitely another show that should get the DVD treatment. Since Firefly is out there, I have faith all shows that deserve it can get the same pretty, shiny package.

The good sales of Firefly, My So-Called Life, Sports Night and so on have given me hope that some of these cult faves, with their devoted audiences who've hung onto their show-love for years, actually will get released. I mean, it makes sense for the suits to take advantage of that and make some money. It would be dumb not to release them! Or so I hope they think. *g*

No, I didn't catch a town name, I'm not sure they stated it. My other wish-list television is Homefront... I have all of them on tape but DVD would be much cooler and take up less space.

I never got to see Homefront, though I heard really good things about it. It's on my wishlist for just that reason. That's a big draw for me in general- DVDs will let me finally see shows I've heard about for years. The space issue is important, too. At this point I practically need a separate house for my videotapes.

I adore both Stargate and Ghostbusters. Stargate was so unappreciated, when it was a really nifty movie. Mythology and sci-fi, can't go wrong with that combo.

Ah, I love this movie! It truly is a shame it didn't do well. It had good actors, a nice sci-fic/spy type plot, that wonderful period feel to it, and great music. I had such a crush on the lead actor, both in this movie and in Iron Will.

I got to see about every other episode of Action, and considering how few were shown, that's not very many. So I'm crossing my fingers and toes that they do release it. I have blanks to be filled in.

I haven't read the Time article yet (I'm saving it in case I end up spending six hours in the car tomorrow), but it looks pretty long and there are a bunch of sidebars and related blurbs (and a picture of Stephen looking pensive). Very exciting stuff. Seven days left!

That's what I say, but it's still a highly pick-on-able movie to favor. Oh well. There's no accounting for taste. It helps that I'm a sucker for any movie that has that "Grande Olde Egyptian Adventure" feel to it, like Stargate or the Mummy movies or Indiana Jones. Mythology and scifi, like you say (and like your icon. heh)

Exactly, I love it for the same reasons. And I had a crush on Billy Campbell, too. What a cutie. I thought he was great in Once and Again- he'd barely aged (and only in the nicest of ways), and he and Sela Ward had great chemistry. Another show I miss. There are so many.

I think I saw most of them, but only once, so I don't remember a whole lot. However, I do remember the ending very well. How they killed Jay Mohr's character, and the paramedics called his time of death as the time and day the show aired (opposite one of the big primetime shows, which killed it). Hee!

Now I'm tempted to go pick up a copy of Time.

Glad you like the icon! It's a manip, and gave me fits. Rebecca had originally been standing between them, and I had to draw Jules a new shoulder. Dashed thing gave me a headache, but I like it now it's finished :)

Hm, I never saw Once and Again. Sela Ward always annoyed me, for some reason. Maybe it was her Sprint commercials...

Me too. Raiders is one of my desert island movies. And I loved the vid. I wasn't sure it would work at first (I mean, an Indy vid? Weird), but it was really well done. Nice song choice, too.

Ah ha, I'm not sure you would have enjoyed Once and Again if you aren't a Sela fan. It was really well-written and had some beautiful acting from leads and supporting types alike, but there was a lot of Sela, at least in the first season. Second season was a little more balanced.

I'm not a country fan myself, although I have a list of exceptions that's almost silly it's so long (Lyle Lovett, Mary Chapin Carpenter, a lot of bluegrass, blah blah blah). But I still don't like it, if anyone asks.

The icon is Denethor (and was made by mimesere), so I'm sure there are people out there thinking "eek! spoiler!" when they see it, but too bad for them. It makes me giggle. *g*

Heh. I'm totally the same way. I will admit to liking quite a few Willie Nelson songs, and some "story songs", but of course, I don't like country, oh no.
