So is Spaulding a big Moby fan? Between this and "Suspect," my poor CD is starting to get a patina of creepiness.

But first, fun with puns and kink! CSI is so strange sometimes.

Fur and Loathing

Silly, silly episode. Silly in a big way. But hey, after weeks of dead babies and raped-and-murdered teens and such, something a bit off-kilter is a nice change. And no, I'm not overlooking the fact that this episode had three corpses, and it's not like it was Happy Fun Time for those people. Chalk it up to being desensitized by violence on TV or something. Or blame it on Gil and his wacky facial expressions- that's probably closer to the mark. I'm sure there are some furious furries out there saying "how dare they mock us like that!" but honestly, is any one surprised? How did they think they were going to be portrayed? It's a weird subculture of a subculture, and it ain't gonna play in Peoria. Remember, this is CBS, not HBO.

Great Gil/Catherine chemistry throughout, though honestly I don't see how people interpret that as a romantic or sexual vibe. It's in the eye of the beholder and all that, I know, but they have such a comfortable friendship. They can tease each other about their respective social lives and weird habits without hitting nerves. They can play. I love that about them- Gil has something with Catherine that he doesn't have with anyone else (with the possible exception of Brass). I'd hate to see it get wrecked by their respective romantic curses, but then, I'm not a 'shipper. Obviously.

Speaking of friendship, Sara and Nick's tension from last ep was absent this week, and they were back to their normal "different-but-complementary approaches spiced with friendly sniping." All is well (for now) or continuity blip? Maybe the lack of violence against women made all the difference, but it was still a bit jarring. Sara was her normal geek-girl self again, which was nice, and Nick was having a very good night. Those people skills of his can be very handy, even when he's using them to draw out and trip up dumb fast food fan security guards. I couldn't believe how stupid the people in the Sara/Nick plot were. I kept waiting for the double-cross or the twist, but nothing. Pretty sad.

No Nick/Greg scenes, and very little Greg in general, but Smart!Nick is a rare enough beast (you've heard that rant, I won't do it again, fear not) that I won't complain. Too much. I'll just hope for more of my guys next week (and Archie! More Archie!). Also loved Nick in the parka. Nick of the North! So very cute.

Greg's kinks do not extend to furries, which is good for his poor, vanilla boyfriend. His "that's what you get for eating..." line was funny not so much for the line (which was such a high school boy thing to say), but for the look on his face when he realized who he was saying it to. Good thing Gil and Catherine like him. Greg seems tired these days, or overworked, or something. Quieter, anyway. I can't decide if he's growing up and settling down, or if he's doing too much and burning out (I hope for the former rather than the latter, of course). And he's obviously been watching the Discovery Channel with Nick (aw), unless he picked up his handy civet trivia elsewhere, which is possible. It's getting so you can't walk down the street these days without being accosted by civet-fanatics and civet-missionaries, trying to convert one to the way of the civet.

Okay, no more candy for Joan.

Also cute- David sharing his happy childhood raccoon memories and commenting to Gil that Mr. Raccoon had "a bad night." Heh, kinda, yeah. And I liked Albert in the freezer, joking about losing arms and legs. He does like to mess with Nick, doesn't he?

Gil in Furrieland was the funniest damn thing I've seen on this show in ages. He's all wide-eyed, "oooh! Subcultures! Kink! Learn learn learn!" while poor Catherine tries not to touch anything or anyone. He is just not quite tuned into Radio Earth sometimes. And you know he thought of that "fur and loathing in Las Vegas" line as soon as he and Cat got on the furrie-track, and was just waiting for the opportune moment to use it. Such a geek. I'll never be one of the "Gil is a sex god!" contingent of fans, but I can't help but like the guy for that unadulterated geekiness.

Warrick? Who? Not a complaint from me, though, because I spent three quarters of last season saying, "Nick? Who?" and it's nice to see someone else getting the short straw for once. Maybe next season it'll be Catherine, who knows?

Brass is the coolest thing ever. I loved the shot of him escorting Sexy Kitty (gah, ew) through the station. Brass is one unflappable guy. He's the quintessence of modern noir cop.

Copycat

I'm guessing this is supposed to be one of Anthony LaPaglia's showcase eps of the season, with the return of Jack's nemesis and the focus on his Deep, Tragic Past, but I didn't think the writing was up to the task. It was a mix of the too random (Why did Spaulding choose that particular case to copycat, out of the hundreds Jack must have worked? How did he find out Jack was a Clemente Fan? Was that in an interview or something? Why decide Jack's mother is his big weak spot, when he's so full of emotional and spiritual holes that he leaks like sieve? Spaulding got lucky with that, I think), and the too obvious (gee, Spaulding was specifically going after women named Doris who fit the profile, and we know the names of Jack's wife, daughters, and former lover already, so who could "Doris" possibly be? Hmm... And then let's drag out the revelation of this mystery for several scenes. Sheesh). I didn't mind the reuse of "One of These Mornings," I guess, but I don't think I get why they picked that as Spaulding's theme. Odd choice. Another odd choice- "Bob Sherman" as Spaulding's lawyer-alias. Does someone on the writing staff have a grudge against cheesy 70's teen idols?

The resolution was okay (I'm glad the victim lived), but just that, okay. Not terribly satisfying, I didn't think. Spaulding falls out a window? That's it? It was clichéd (of course Jack grabs him, of course he can't hold him, etc), it was less dramatic than they seemed to think, and it wasn't very far. Sorry, that was what, two floors? That's not healthy for you, certainly, but I wouldn't think it'd necessarily be fatal. Again, Spaulding got lucky- he could have ended up with some broken limbs and the law swooping down on him, or as a vegetable, or something. And Jack's trauma over his mom wasn't really getting to me either. Maybe it's just me and my Jack-issues. The whole thing was just a meh for me.

It was directed by Tim Matheson, though, so yay Tim, I guess. I wish I were more impressed, for his sake. And Sean Marquette played someone (my guess is the oldest of the victim's kids), which is important because he's the brother of Christopher Marquette, aka Adam Rove, my JoA darling. So that was neat.

What else... Martin as Clarice is a cute idea, though not if he has to spend lots of time with homophobic alpha-male scum with bad teeth. Those were seriously evil teeth. Poor, pretty Martin. He inspires the dad-vibes in Jack like Greg does with Gil, only Jack's not that good or consistent about it- one week he's protective and careful, and the next he's throwing Martin in the air and hoping vaguely that he lands on his feet. Jack also doesn't respond well to being questioned, even when the questioning is perfectly valid and even to be expected, like when Martin, Danny and Viv were looking for loose ends in the original case. Jack, you know how this works. You can't skip that part, it's routine. Calm down.

Martin's hair is almost back! Finally! And Danny got his cut, though again he didn't brush it. Oh well, at least when it's shorter, it's less distracting. Boring, dorky suit and ugly tie on Martin, strange, stripy shirt and ugly tie on Danny, chartreuse shirt on Viv, greasy hair on Jack... Not a great fashion week. Someone stole the costumer's doughnuts again. Bad actors, bad.

Light Sam week and I don't really have anything to say about her, I don't think. Not a lot of Viv thoughts either, though I continue to like Jack best in scenes with her. I really like the fact that she can just stand there silently beside him, because he knows without words that he can confide in her, and that she knows how and when to push him. They're not Gil and Catherine, but they're good together.

Two brief scenes with my tech guy! Yay! Name him, PTB! He deserves it for tracing Spaulding's calls- techies in tv-land almost never trace calls in time, and he managed to do it even with Viv and Danny backseat driving. Guys, it almost never helps to tell people that they need to be doing what they are, in fact, currently doing. It's really just irritating.

I'll have to check out everyone else's thoughts in the morning, because it's late and my sugar is wearing off. This is such an unhealthy time of year for someone with no resistance to candy. Fun, but not healthy.

It's my theory that this is the direct influence of a serious, committed relationship with Nick. These things tend to have a calming influence, particularly when one is sleeping with such a stable, down-to-earth guy. So yay for the subtext even though they didn't have a single scene together last night.

That theory works fine for me. I don't mind his wackiness being toned down, really- wacky is fun, but it can get wearing on a daily basis, and I could see Nick losing patience over time. Anyway, we all have to grow up sometime.

A big "word" to everything you said about "Copycat".

Was that the song they played at the very end when they were searching for the girl? I like that song, but have no idea what it's called or who sings it.

Hee. You're amusing when you're on a sugar high. ::passes you more candy::

Yup, that was it. They played it at the very beginning of the ep too, and way back when Spaulding first showed up in "Suspect," though I forget whether it was used in "Are you Now...". It's "One of These Mornings," from Moby's album 18. I like the song, but it seems like a weird choice for a murderous pedophile, you know?

(Enabler! You know I can't resist candy! Oh no, my will-power... slipping... away... *g*)

Cool, thanks! I may go download that song. I rather liked it. You're right, though, it does seem an odd choice for such a creepy, evil guy.

Heheheh. My evil plan is working...
