The name change thing bugged me too. I don't see how this is better.
A big "word" to your comments on the Sam/Martin thing. They work quite well as friends, but anything more would be stupid. Not to mention a scandal. It's like bad fanfic, where everyone in the office/ship/team is involved with each other.
Martin's continuing fashion disasters I'm taking as a character choice, much like RGB writers have interpreted RGB Egon's pink shirts- the oddity of the choice reflects a desire to break away from a restrictive upbringing and the hazards inherent therein, ie. if you aren't used to wearing colorful things, it might take a while to get it right.
Ooh! I very much like this theory. I always enjoyed reading explanations of Egon's pink shirts, especially Robyn's, in her college series. It makes sense that a person might go from one extreme to another when finally presented with the option.
