Greg is cute. Dirty!Greg is very cute. Dirty!Greg asserting himself so that dorky old Gil and Brass don't brush him off is super-mega-turbo-cute, and I want him. Except then Nick would be left without, and I couldn't do that to poor Nick. Because they’re in love, and the writers so know it! Yay!
Also? Martin is the biggest dork ever, and is nearly as cute as Greg. Even with the still-too-short hair. And Danny is starting to win his way back into my affections, so all-in-all it was a good couple of hours of TV.
All for Our Country
- Is it just me, or are Gil's pre-credit quips getting less quippy and more... annoyingly oblique? "Not paranoid enough." Huh?
- Nicky is so skinny this season. I want to feed him soup. Also, he now joins Brass as a member of the "calls Warrick 'Rick'" club. Which is interesting to me, if only because later in the ep, Brass calls Nick "Nicky" (in his mean little sideswipe at Nick when he and Gil are arguing and what was that all about? Never mind, I'll get to that), which is generally a Gil thing. Nick and Brass have a lot of character similarities, and they have a much easier relationship than Nick and Gil do. None of which I feel like going into right now- I just thought the nickname thing from both of them was cute.
- Okay, Cat's little idea of the team all living together, and Sara's "Ew, no, not Gil" moment made me laugh, but their case joins the body-in-a-bag, the body-in-a-chemical-drum, the cannibal cheerleader, and a few others as cases I never, ever want to see again. Ewwwww. (It was amusing to see Sara call that dude "bitch," though. Ha!)
- the new ballistics techie (Rich?) was very cute (not Nick, Greg or Archie cute, but very cute still), but I want Bobby back. He and Nick and their dueling drawls (and flirting) were very cute.
- who is this phone-techie chick flinging herself at Warrick? She is not one with the subtle, that's for sure. And Warrick goes for it, the slut. He definitely has more sex than the rest of the team (except Nick and Greg! ‘Cause they’re so in love!).
- yay Archie! Now that Greg is moving up on the food chain, Archie is the new Greg! Archie appearance every week, please!
- I'm not a Gil fangirl, everyone knows that, but he does have one mannerism that I find really cute (cute is apparently my watchword for the night). When he's asking suspects to cooperate, like when he says, "Well, we need to see all your shoes," to the judge and co., he bats his eyelashes. Snerk. You charmer, you.
- So what about Owen Wilson-valet-guy from last week? He talks to Nicky, runs to the media, blabs, and vanishes? Has he disappeared into the Continuity Closet, never to be heard from again? All that Nick-pain and I don’t even get to see the guy die horribly?
- This cops vs. CSIs thing- is this going to be a running theme? The fight between Gil and Brass seemed meaner and angrier than usual. What set them off so fiercely? And then they just... made up. It seemed off to me. Brass seemed very defensive- it's not like he's never dealt with bad cops before, and that jab at Nick was unlike him. And Gil is usually "Investigate Things from Every Boring Angle Guy," not "Cling to My One Lame Idea Guy." Very odd. And that bad cop, Gil's new nemesis, is he going to be a recurring character? I'm not entirely surprised that Gil is a good shot, since he's an obsessive perfectionist, but still, it was a little jarring to see him with a gun. I'm not sure how I felt about that whole plotline and its accompanying vibe- it wasn't bad, exactly, but it didn't seem very CSI to me. It felt like it wandered in from one of the 200 other cop shows on CBS this season. Hm.
- Greg! Yay Greg! Poor Greg, sent off to hunt for bottles. I loved his expression when they all turned to stare at him before sending him on the hunt ("What? No, what? Is there something on my face?"), and then he looked so hot and unhappy (and cute) , all stuck with the footwork like that. But he did it! He found the big neon sign piece of evidence! And he dug in his heels when Gil tried to shoo him away like a big jerk, and got all assertive! And was right! Woo! Go Greg! And the covered-in-dirt look was very cute. Very. And then he and Nicky hang out and bond while they work, in a totally random and adorable moment. Awww. So, so nice to see. That scene balanced out every bit of dead-in-the-tub ookiness. Geek boys in love, tra la tra la. (Uh oh! More evidence of brainwashing! The show is brainwashing me!)
Revelations
- The opening scene, with Father Henry walking through the dark streets, covered in blood, while the lovely “chanting and boy alto” music plays, had a nice Brimstone feel to it. That's never a bad thing in my book. The episode as a whole had a rather elegaic vibe to it (because of the dying priest thing, I suppose) and the ending to the case was quite sad, but I thought it worked. Overall, this episode was a lot more enjoyable than last week for me. Very nice acting from nearly everyone, too.
- random trivia- St. Germaine (the patron of Father Henry's church) is the patron saint of the abandoned and the abused, especially children. So a nice, slightly meta choice for the show, I think.
- Yay, John Diehl! Not a big part, and not in it until the third act, but still, it's always nice to see him.
- Danny is defensive about priests, isn't he? And shoplifting alcohol in fifth grade? Oh, Danny. Okay, I'm still a little mad at him for his Martin-mistreatment late last season, but this episode went a long way to winning him back into my favor.
- so it's been two months since the shooting, and Sam still hasn't started therapy. I know it doesn't do any good if the patient doesn't want to be there and that it isn't a magic pill, but I still think Jack should have talked her into it before she killed two suspects. She's coming apart at the seams, and she's just too stubborn (and scared) to admit it. I hate seeing it, even though I'm not a fan of the character. Poor kid. I'm glad Vivian was honest when Sam asked her if she thought she was ready to be in the field yet- she dealt with Sam so much better than Jack did. She was sympathetic, but still firm and honest. Sam does not get any coddling from Vivian (and Sam does not appreciate that, but she needs it). Less personal baggage helps, but also I think Viv is just a better leader. (Jack has not regained his lost ground like Danny has, obviously.)
- Of course Jack is a lapsed Catholic. Guilt, guilt! More guilt for Jack! Feh.
- Danny lying in wait in the back of the church and then springing out at the kid was amusing, as was the image of him as the Stay-in-School Enforcer, putting the Fear of Danny Taylor in potential drop-outs. Snerk.
- Okay, still mad at Jack, but his joke to Vivian (while they waited for the bishop) about needing a new desk made me smile.
- Martin's suits, dude. Someone help that boy. I did notice that his hair is already starting to grow out though, so whew. In next week's TV Guide, there's an itty-bitty pic of Jack and Martin, and Martin's hair is slightly longer yet and spiky (and he has stubble!), so fingers crossed that it's actually a pic from the ep and not just any random older shot.
- Martin and Danny so did not approve when Father Mazzoni (?) reached over and took Theresa's hand. Danny looked especially unhappy. No leeway for priests who stray from those two.
- Martin's "smooth dismissal" comment to Danny also made me giggle, because dude, no kidding. And then the prison teasing! Hee! Yeah Danny, you should be nicer to Martin, but I still thought it was cute. And Martin! Interning at a prison to teach accounting! He's the biggest dork in the world! It was completely random (accounting? the hell?), but whatever, the writers obviously have no clue what they're doing with him. He makes Nick and Greg look like Warrick-the-Smooth in comparison. I love him so.
- I loved the ending of Father Henry's plotline. Hector Elizondo was a gift to the character, as he always is, and he made me cry. He even made me stop being annoyed with Jack for a while. Of course, Jack had to go screw it up by running off to hold hands with Sam, but for a few minutes I liked him again. Thank you, Father Henry.
Also? Martin is the biggest dork ever, and is nearly as cute as Greg. Even with the still-too-short hair. And Danny is starting to win his way back into my affections, so all-in-all it was a good couple of hours of TV.
