From "A Walk Across England" by Michael Parfit, Smithsonian, Sept. 2003:

"The route followed country roads more than trails, but often broke away to take rights-of-way through farms. One was a free-range chicken farm, with thousands of birds hunting avidly through the fields. Right and left, they strutted up to us with an aggressive air, which made me wonder what would happen if one of us tripped and fell. Would they swarm and peck us down to bones in seconds? That's the kind of thing you think about when you're walking 190 miles. You start off seeking a profound awareness of the complexity of life, and what you get is tiddlywinks and killer chickens."

(Speaking as someone who used to raise chickens, yeah, they'd eat you if they got a chance. Chickens are fierce.)

And a meme from [livejournal.com profile] carmarthen: What historical figures would you commemorate as fingerpuppets?

Joan of Arc (of course)
Dorothy Parker
Lewis and Clark (as a set, with little boats)
Alexander Hamilton
Thomas, Lord Cochran
Freydis Eriksdottir (with pregnant belly and sword)
Doc Holliday
Colette
Teresa of Avila
Tacitus
Aud the Deep-Minded
Crazy Horse
Abigail Adams
Freya Stark
John Paul Jones
Aethelwold of Winchester (but I'd have to keep him away from Colette. And Dorothy. And Doc. And the Vikings.)

Huh, this list is really heavily biased towards writers and historians. Three saints, too. Weird.

I very much like your list. Historical handpuppets, what a charming idea. I may have to compose a list of my own...

The next time I'm at the fabric store, I may have to get some felt and sequins and stuff. Making historical handpuppets seems like a fun way to spend a Saturday, I think, even though I'm not particularly crafty (cross-stitch is about it for me). Joan, at least, would be fun to do.

I'm not particularly crafty either (ok, so not at all), so I'll leave the actual handpuppet making to you guys :) Still, there are some it'd be cool to do. Maybe a General Hancock, as the Union officer uniform would be fun.
