Taking a minute between thunderstorms

Remember that movie on MST3K that was so terrible that eventually Servo was reduced to shouting "END END END" at the screen? That's me and this summer. I hate this heat. I can't keep a thought in my head for more than a minute. And if it's not that, it's the electrical storms chasing me off the computer when I'm right in the middle of stuff. Grr.

But one thought that did stick was how much I like "Chasing the Bus" as a Nick episode. Of course, it's great from a Greg/Nick standpoint- Greg's crush is pretty obvious (well, not to Nick, but that's no surprise), and Nick is, as ever, the friendliest member of the team toward Greg (imagine if Greg had been thrown onto Warrick's dubious mercies for his first trip into the field). Poor Greg. His idea about checking in the bus for the missing casualty was a good one, even if it turned out not to be the case (and it did set Nick and Gil on the right path). I just wanted to hug him as he got more and more emotionally bruised-looking. Sara's clumsy attempt at comfort was perfect for her; she tries (when it occurs to her), but she's just not very practiced in the strange ways of this thing called human society. She makes Gil look smooth sometimes. Still, at least she tried.

But aside from all that, Nick got to be smart and competent and demonstrate his good people skills. Too often Nicky is "Object Lesson Boy"- if the script requires someone to say something insensitive or be shocked by Vegas' seamier side or get smacked down by Gil for whatever reason, more often than not that someone is Nick. To some extent, that's in character- he is on the straightlaced side, and he has a regrettable tendency to rush to conclusions, when his need to prove himself gets in the way of a more patient and complete methodology. But the writers overdo it, I think- if he weren't intelligent and talented he wouldn't be on Gil's team, and it frustrates me that "Smart Nicky" episodes, where he gets to demonstrate his competence comfortably, aren't necessarily the norm (particularly this past season. What was up with Nick and Gil this year?). So any episode that shows Nick actually knowing what he's doing (and being good at it), rather than gawping at the freaks and ticking off Gil, gets points from me. Particularly if it's slashy. So yay for "Chasing the Bus".

Ooh, and tension on Without a Trace! All was not hearts and flowers on "Young Turks in Love," that's for sure. For some reason I like to see Martin's fits of temper, since he's always so controlled. Besides, he's pretty when he's mad (Danny certainly seems to think so- should have kissed him, Danny!). Martin's Bad Cop routine was rather less... natural seeming than Danny's standard balance of flirtation and semi-restrained violence, but it was cute. Any scene with Danny and Martin running an interrogation is great, as is any hint about Danny's childhood.

Oh yeah, and there was interesting plot stuff too. Heh. Yup, good episode all around.

Was that the MST of Manos: Hands of Fate? :D And I loved yesterday's CSI episode, too. Greg is always so adorable! And hee, to your comment on Sara's social skills. I actually hadn't noticed very often. I always thought Gil was more of the awkward/loner type.

Argh, I wish they had ended Manos early. That movie was evil. I'm sure there's something in the Geneva Convention about making people watch it. But the one I was thinking of was actually The Wild World of Batwoman. That one's more goofy (and slow) than evil.

That's part of the reason I'm not in favor of a Gil/Sara romance (though hardly the only one)- they're too much alike. And this is all just my opinion, natch. Sara is often a bit too abrupt, a bit too intense- she can do the social thing (with mixed success, like with Hank), but it doesn't seem to come naturally. But give her a nice forensic puzzle to focus on and she's perfectly comfortable. Gil's a lot like that, although he has an absent-minded professor thing going on that sometimes helps him seem a bit less harsh than Sara. But that same disregard for/discomfort with social niceties is there- neither of them is very good at friendly chatting or asking personal questions without making them seem like interrogations, and often neither seems to bother with that sort of thing (whether through discomfort or it just not occurring to them, I don't know). They stay in "job headspace" a lot more often than the rest of the team. I think that's part of why Sara's attracted to Gil, like drawing to like and all that. Or so my theory goes. *g*

I don't think Gil/Sara would work well, either, unless you're into uncommunicative, angsty, and uncomfortable relationships.

My fav. ship in CSI is Gil/Lady Heather. They're compatible, in a very strange way.

Am I very very strange for not seeing any slashy vibes in that show, though? Maybe I've been spoiled with LotR and its incredibly obviously slashiness that I can no longer see the more suble stuff...

Gil/Lady Heather worked for me too, actually. Too bad he torpedoed that so effectively. Dork. They would have been interesting (to say the least).

And no, you're not at all strange for not seeing slashiness in it. There's a reason it's such a wee fandom, after all. *g* I see a vibe with Nick and Greg, but I know lots of slashers who give me funny looks for that. But I have a thing for crimeslash anyway, and I find fandoms with subtle subtext balance my Really Obvious Fandoms (LotR, Highlander, etc) pretty well. It sometimes gets frustrating that I have to subsist on my pairing getting one two-minute scene every other episode, but what can you do?

I made sure to catch WaT last night, and I enjoyed it once again. I really like the interaction between Danny (who was rather sexy in the interrogation scenes) and Martin, although I wish they'd get more screen time!

Looking forward to Sunday's ep. It looks good.

They definitely don't get enough screentime. And I agree, Danny was pretty sexy in the interrogation scenes (he tends to be when he loses his temper). Martin was so snitty with him the whole episode, poor guy. I think he was jealous of that Polly chick. *g*

Sunday's ep is the one with the Saudi doctor, right? Really good but really stressful episode, especially for a Martin fan. Yes and no. Actually flat-out getting angry, not that often (and mostly when kids are involved in the case- he has a biiig protective streak). But he does that "barely holding in the temper" thing a lot. He's fiesty. ;)

It is, which really surprised me, because it's a clip show of all things. Who would have guessed it would turn out so well? It was the third to last episode of the season, so there might be a bit of a wait still, I'm not sure. Shouldn't be too long, though, since summer's ending. :(

Ummmm... I think the new seaon starts on... Sept. 24th? Around then, anyway, I'm not entirely sure. I still can't believe how quickly the summer went by.

I'm pretty sure that the movie was The Wild World of Batwoman, and truly awful movie, although Manos: The Hands of Fate was really, really bad, too.

That's what I thought, but it's been ages since I've seen either and I couldn't be sure. And I've been trying valiantly to repress Manos, but no luck so far. What a horrorshow.

You're right on Danny. :-) Watching Thursday's episode, and the choice of facial expressions on the actor's face at the end when he's kissed on the cheek -- he's not het.

BTW -- I have a new Kim Possible tape begun for you, and starting the 8th, they'll run it every weekday afternoon, so it'll fill up by the end of September. This one is six-hour mode, btw.

Trivia - Did you know the voice of Ron Stoppable is the same actor as did the voice of young Batman in "Batman Beyond?" Played Terry. The actor doesn't do much for me, but I adore his voice acting. :-) (Will Friedel, of "Boy Meets World" where he played the older brother.)

Woo hoo! More Kim Possible! I collared my parents and made them watch the ones with the "Ron Factor" (snerk) and Shego and Senor Junior, and now they're big fans. Mwa ha. And I never would have recognized Ron as Terry. Keen! It's always neat to find out stuff like that.

I adore Kim Possible. Glad I could help, and congrats on finding more converts! Though I like the first season better than this one so far. Funnier. Then again, there's one of the new ones with Rufus playing Peruvian Hairless at a dog show that's just great. :-) It's on the tape.

Saw an ad for a Kim Possible DVD that appears to be a direct-to-video movie, that's due out in September. I so want. Boo-ya! As Ron would say it. :-)
