So. Remember back to your American Lit class. What's wrong with this dust jacket? I'm seriously tempted to bid anyway, but tsk tsk, artist-person. (One of my favorite Far Side comics touched on this, but since Gary Larson sicced his lawyers on his fansites a few years back, I'm stuck without a link. Frustrating.)

Uh, the whale is black? The tail is bent at an anatomically impossible angle?
And which Far Side?

Ha! I didn't even notice the tail, I was so busy thinking, "Wait a minute, shouldn't that whale be white? That's pretty important, right?"

The Far Side is the one with the lookout in the crow's nest hollering, "The white whale! The whiiiiiiiite wh... No, no... My mistake!... A black whale! A regular blaaaaaaack whale!" while Ahab stands below on the deck with his eyes bugging out. I love that one.

Oh my. That's just wrong. You'd think the artist could do a *little* research on the novel beforehand. Black whale indeed...

It's not even a great picture.

No kidding. I always thought the whole "white whale" factor was a pretty basic and well-known plot point, but not among graphic artists of the 30's, I guess.

What I like about the picture is that it's so colorful. It's the happiest-looking Moby Dick I've ever seen. It's like... "Wacky Ahab's Festive Luau" or something. Just so bizarre that I can't help but like it.

That's the least moby dick I've ever seen. Or is it the least dick moby? I'm not sure.

I just know that I'd rather be mobied than... you know.

Would you like a LJ code? It would save you from having to be anonymous, and I do have extras. Just let me know.

Thanks for the LJ offer, but I blog to my hearts content on ANR. I just like swinging by and reading things about pirates... and making the occasional comment. Us nerds have to stick together! Arrrrr!

Ah, pirates. Pirates have that effect on people, even on geeks like us. :) Well, you're always welcome to comment, of course, and if you ever change your mind about a LJ code, let me know. It's a nerd fiesta around here, and there's always room for one more. *g*
