Possible vague costume spoilers for Eomer in RotK that I'm not cutting- spoiler-free extremists stop reading now! (but please do skip ahead to the two stories I want to rec, okay?)

My RotK Eomer figure arrived today, much sooner than expected, and he's gorgeous. The detailing on his armor and cloak is just amazing, full of stylized horse heads and perfectly painted "embroidery". Every wrinkle in the leather of his gloves and boots is there, every line of stitching on his bracers is molded and painted (neatly! Not a blemish to be seen!), every link of his chainmail is sharp and clear, even though it's barely visible under his armor, and his hair has just the right wild, windblown look. Toy Biz even got Karl's adorable chipmunk cheeks and sexy mouth right this time! I wasn't happy with the TTT Eomer figure, which was a perfectly fine generic warrior of Rohan, but which didn't look much like Eomer. The RotK figure gets him right. Truly a magnificent piece of work.

So now my question becomes this. Toy Biz is justly proud of the new computer-scanning technology that they've been using for the LotR figures (they scan Karl's face, the sculptor uses the info from the scan to make the model, blah blah blah, and the AF looks like Karl instead of Random Eomer-like Guy). The results have been almost uniformly great, and the best of the line look amazingly like someone stuck Bernard Hill, Cate Blanchett, Hugo Weaving, Sean Bean or even Orlando Bloom (at least for the TTT figure) into a Debigulator and zapped them down. So if that's possible, how come all of the two hundred different Aragorns they've released have been so (relatively) lousy? Did Viggo skip his session with the scanner? Did he keep jumping around when he was supposed to sit still? The best part about the Aragorns has been watching my geekgirl crush, Collin from All Nerd Review, pick on them. There will probably be another three hundred or so Aragorns in among these last figures, so I haven't given up hope (and the Elessar/Brego set will be a must-buy for the clothing and armor alone), but it would be nice if at least one of them had a face that looked something like Viggo.

And while I'm here (much later than I'd planned, but still), I wanted to rec a couple of PotC stories, just in case they had slipped past anyone who might be interested:

[livejournal.com profile] castalianspring's wonderful ficlet, Pipped Over a Pippin, is a glimpse at the other complicated love story of PotC. I mean, of course, Barbossa and his affair with apples. Go, read, it's terribly fun!

And [livejournal.com profile] gileonnen, writer of much Jack/Norrington fic (yay!), goes for a different pairing in Bull in a China Shop. Pintel and Ragetti in all their grubby (but sweet!) glory. Ah, l'amour.

Rumor has it that our man Viggo refused to be scanned because he was afraid of people voo-dooing a perfect likeness of him. At least, this is what he told Nickelodeon magazine or somesuch.

No idea if you're who you claim to be or if you're even reading this, but hi! And that wouldn't surprise me at all about Viggo, really. Odd man. Shame that it means all the Aragorn AFs look like his half-wit distant cousin, though.

It's as if they took 2 Aragorns, mated them a few times, mated the hideously-against-nature offspring (in some kind of bizarre milking ritual) and then got one to sit for the realscan, sufficiently inbred to stupefaction. They gave him pudding to get him to sit still... which ALSO explains the odd beardage.

After the scan, they fed him to the other Viggos, or Striders, or Aragorns, who then grew smarter from eating the meat of lesser animals. cause that's how it works. At least in textbooks from the 1800s, which is all I read. This modern world confuses and angers me. Garrrrrrr.

Honestly I don't think anything explains the "odd beardage." Radiation poisoning, maybe. Come to think of it, that would explain a lot...
