Girls and their toys
Jul. 27th, 2003 11:36 pmThe surest way to make me want something is to have it fail to exist. No Captain Jack action figures? Must have, must have! Or, failing that, must have the next best thing, ie. some other form of miniature plastic Johnny Depp.
Back when Sleepy Hollow first opened, I resisted buying any of the merchandise. I loved the movie (still do), but I didn't particularly like the Crone figure, and while Daredevil (the horse) was very nicely done, what on earth would I do with a pocket-sized Christopher Walken? Scare the neighbor kids? Ichabod, the one figure I might have wanted, was comparatively rare, and the one time I saw it in a store, I was too-much-sushi-broke. Great figure, though, with a real likeness to Johnny Depp and a bunch of weird little gadgets. And eventually I forgot about it and spent my money on Xanders and Jen Yus and every damn elf that ever wandered through Middle Earth (one Boromir figure available, 200 Legolases. Cruel world). Cut to several years later, Johnny Depp is fabulous as usual but not around in collectable form, and I finally remember Ichabod. Ebay, and some poor sap who's selling his MIP figure for $2.99 plus shipping, to the rescue! Five bucks later, I have my mini-Johnny. Not the one I truly want, but a good enough substitute to tide me over until the Pirates sequel and the rafts of merchandise that will follow (I'm optimistic. Don't pop my bubble).
But the other figure I've just gotten, the auction I was trying so carefully not to jinx the other day, is the RotK Eomer figure. I love this figure. No, really. This figure and I are going to run away and live happily ever after in the Berkshires, it's so wonderful. TORn has some not terribly good pictures of it (spoilery for Eomer's costume in RotK, if you're extremist about such things)- they'll at least give you a general idea of how fantastic this figure came out (especially compared to the TTT version, which was a good figure that looked nothing like Karl). Gorgeous little plastic horselord, I love you.
And the best part is, he was ridiculously cheap, presumably because most people either don't know he's been released already or haven't switched the "buy LotR toys" parts of their brains back on yet. Not that I should be spending money anyway, considering what I just spent on comics, but he was going to be bought at some point and better now when he's cheap. I'll just have to be really, really good for a while. Until the Elessar/Brego set hits the shelves, anyway (slightly spoilery again, but an absolute must-have figure- here's a closer view of Aragorn, and this gives a full view of his armor)
The one good thing about there only being one LotR movie left? Soon I'll run out of toys to buy. And not a moment too soon.
Several quizzies, variously nicked from

cortese, and somebody else.

Which of Henry VIII's wives are you?

Hm. Okay then. I like Catherine; I always have. But I wouldn't have thought I'd get her as my result. Interesting.

Damn right!

Your name is Captain Sir Edward Pellew, of course!
You always seem to know exactly what you are
doing and are a brillant inspiration to your
crew. (Even though you put Bunting through the
Gauntlet for stealing food from the hold!) Even
though you may seem like a chiseled old man,
you are really nothing but a big softy who
likes to pretend. Older women love you,
especially my mom. :P

And again with the good captain! Admittedly, this quiz was impossibly easy to cheat on, but I still think I'm more Pellew than Horatio or Archie (despite the red hair). I'm almost arrogant enough to be Edrington, though.

Date: 2003-07-28 11:41 am (UTC)It is a damned good sculpt, but I've always been happy with the McFarlaine toys. They also do a line of hockey figs that is really nice. No, I'm not obsessed, not even a little. O-:-)

Date: 2003-07-28 08:54 pm (UTC)My sister collects the McFarlane hockey figs (I love the game, but I'm not the psycho fangirl she is), and I've been really impressed with them. You're right, McFarlane does very good work. Lucky for me (and my credit card) they don't make more figures I want to buy.

Date: 2003-07-28 09:33 pm (UTC)The face isn't as good as the Ichabod--he doesn't look quite as gentle as he should, IMO--but the rest of the sculpt is amazing, esp. the detail on the hands. They did this fig as part of the Movie Maniacs line if I remember correctly, which kind of baffles me as I don't see why poor, sweet Edward should be keeping company with the likes of Michael Myers. :-P

LOL! Yeah, same here. The only hockey fig I have is the Sharks Evgeni Nabokov, and believe me, I did a LOT of bitching at it last season when Nabby was
holding out for more money, ahem, in contract negotations. ;-)(no subject)
Date: 2003-07-29 03:15 am (UTC)Aw, poor Edward. Always judged on his manicure, despite being sweet and... well, not cuddly, exactly. But sweet! Heh. Sounds like I'll definitely have to look for this fig (on Ebay, I suppose, probably my best bet), assuming it can be had for less than an arm and a leg. That's always the problem with changing your mind much later on whether or not you want something collectible- will you have to sell your organs to get it?

Hee! Excellent, voodoo action figures! Great idea! Boy, if they'd come out with a Darcy Tucker one, I'd be right there with you. Or a Tie Domi, maybe- that'd be even scarier than the Horseman. Tie Domi almost trampled me in a bookstore in Toronto, once. Scary looking guy.
(And I know I've said this before, but I love your icon. Makes me smile every time I see that gorgeous face. *g*)

Date: 2003-07-29 09:39 am (UTC)Argh, yeah. I was lucky. At the time Edward came out, I was dating a guy who owned a comic book shop and he always tucked away cool toys he thought I would like as soon as they were released.

LOL! Oh, man, yeah.
My closest brush with a hockey player was winding up parked next to Owen Nolan at Logitech Ice Center in San Jose. I'd gone down for the public skate and so wasn't expecting the freaking team captain to be parked out front with us commoners, instead of in the fenced off special lot reserved for the players. ::G::

Mm, yes. I do know what you mean. :-D
