All of life's riddles are answered in the movies."

I keep pondering that book meme that everyone has done recently, and despite my love of talking about myself and my books, I don't think I'll end up doing it. Too indecisive and too lazy. The movie version of it, though, that I can do with my brain tied behind my back.

1. What movies are your comfort viewing -- the ones you slink back to in times of stress?

Raiders of the Lost Ark, Captain Blood, While You Were Sleeping, The Dark Crystal, Ghostbusters, Stargate, The Thin Man, Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, Laura, The More The Merrier, The Princess Bride, Casablanca, Holiday... quite a few, really. And there are more I could list. But then watching movies is my major coping mechanism, and I do tend to wallow.

2. What was your favorite movie as a child, and why?

Raiders, because I wanted to be Indy, or Ladyhawke. Ladyhawke ruled my brain for years and years. It was the perfect movie for the girl I was- it had knights, magic, horses, hawks, Matthew Broderick... perfect. I watched Forbidden Planet more than was healthy, too.

3. What was your favorite movie as an adolescent, and why?

Say Anything, maybe, or Edward Scissorhands. Or Dead Poets Society. I was a romantic, dramatic type, obviously. But the movie I watched more often than any other, though I may not have loved it as passionately? Adventures in Babysitting. Heh.

4. What is the genre of movies gathering dust on your video library -- the movies you've bought but just never got around to watching?

Hasn't happened, really. I have one or two individual films I need to watch and haven't yet, like Zorba the Greek, but genres? Nope. I'm pretty good at ignoring the entire existence of thing that don't interest me right off.

5. What kind of movies would you like to say you watch, but never do?

Erm, how about the French New Wave. I have tried, but... Or all the ones Scorsese, DePalma, and the rest did in the 70's, when they were young and angry. Just not for me.

6. What's the oddest movie you ever saw?

Tod Browning's Freaks. Freaky stuff, that. Or Cane Toads, which is hilarious but deeply odd.

7. What movie were you never able to get through, despite the recommendations of people you respect?

Apocalypse Now. Yes, I know.

8. What's the movie it took you a couple of tries to get into, but was as good as promised once you finally made it?

Wings of Desire. The first time I tried to watch it, it was about 100 degrees out and I was tired and sick, and hours of black and white angels falling in love in German was a baaaad idea. It's really a winter sort of film, I think.

9. What's your favorite animation . . . or do you even have one?

101 Dalmatians, Watership Down, The Last Unicorn, Robin Hood (Disney's, that is), The Iron Giant, My Neighbor Totoro, Mulan... I love animation.

10. The desert island. Three movies (and collected works don't count; if you want *Lord of the Rings* it'll cost you all three slots). Go:

Ghostbusters
The Muppet Movie
The More the Merrier

I could never choose just three, though. I mean, look, I don't even have any romances or adventures there. That'd never do. I’d need to be on a desert island with a complete video library, sticked with films of my choosing. There are just too many necessary ones out there.
