Well, it seemed a more appropriate subject line than "more spam," what with my current nautical bent and all. Wokka wokka. My last few posts have been rather bloggish, too. Meh, I'm too hot to think deep thoughts, and I'm distracted by the thought of "Victory for Humanity" on WaT tomorrow night (good case, as their cases go, but who cares? I'm in it for the 30 second D/M chat about vampires).

[livejournal.com profile] zortified has written Jack Sparrow/Bootstrap Bill slash, which makes me happy. The PotC sequel in my head is all about the adventures of Jack, Bill (miraculously not dead- come on, I'm a Boromir girl, this one's easy) and the Black Pearl. Those pretty, fiesty young'ns can come along too, but only if they don't distract me from Jack, Bill, and their "girl".

In a case of freaky timing, since I was just talking about this yesterday, Film Score Monthly has posted their review of PotC (with spoilers, obviously). And being the magazine they are, they naturally comment on the composer switch (from Silvestri to Badelt) that happened quite late in the game. The theory on the FSM boards at the time was... well, Andy sums it up pretty well: Although Alan Silvestri was announced as the film's composer, he apparently quit after arguing with the filmmakers over the direction of the score. After listening to the final soundtrack (credited to Badelt, "produced" by Zimmer, with a half-dozen composers receiving "Additional Music" credit), it's my guess that Silvestri exited after the film was extensively temp-tracked with "Gladiator" and other Media Ventures cues (and likely told them if they wanted that sound, to go and hire them).

So there's some geek-gossip for you. There's also a short, less enthusiastic review of League of Extraordinary Gentlemen on the page- btw, if you like the score for that movie and want the CD, Varese Sarabande is doing something rather strange with it. It isn't being released in the US, but it will be available through their website for a limited time. I guess they aren't expecting it to be a big seller, even though the movie has had the usual big marketing bonanza and it's a Trevor Jones score (one which I haven't heard, but he's generally reliable and sells fairly well).

Random amusing quote about what works in PotC, from Lileks: No wire-fu. When people have fights, they do not walk up walls or leap in the air and do a somersault; they stand there and hack at each other with pointed sticks, the way God and Douglas Fairbanks wanted them to do.

I have no idea if this thing still works, since the mere thought of playing it has my computer giving me an incredulous look, but supposedly here is a little movie trailer for Treasure Island, done with Playmobil figures. And here are some cute pirate cakes and things. You know, for kids! (sorry, I have a weakness for Hudsucker Proxy.)

Nothing to do with pirates, but here's an interview with Kevin Murphy, of MST3K fame (he was Tom Servo, my fave robot). The gimmick is that the site the interview was done for it The Empty Bowl, so the whole thing is about breakfast cereal. Keen.

And to end on a random note, last night I dreamed that I was holding in my hand a shiny new set of Magnificent Seven DVDs. The packaging was sepia-ish, with darker brown and red writing, and there were three discs, one with Chris/Buck/Vin, one with JD/Nathan/Josiah, and Ezra getting his own (since it was my subconscious designing it and all). But I woke up just as I was checking what the extras were. Stupid alarm. Still, it was a nice change from the things I've been dreaming about recently, sinking pirate ships and high SB/VM drama inspired by [livejournal.com profile] caras_galadhon and [livejournal.com profile] savageseraph's stressful, wonderful epistolary WIP. At least I didn't wake up thinking "nooooo!" Wait, yes I did.

Okay, time for pie. Every biting bug in three counties helped me pick berries for hours this morning, and now I'm itchy and exhausted, but I have pie. Mmmm.

Ooh, cool! Thanks so much for the heads up. Lovely little bit of fic, and possibly a sequel to come. I totally agree with your vision of a movie sequel.

Interesting info about the music. I'm not very familiar with Trevor Jones, but I liked his work very much. I'd say he has a promising career ahead.

This quote made me laugh *so* hard. I love it *snicker*

Ahh, Mag 7 on DVD...one can dream *sigh*

It hardly seems fair that Arli$$ is out on DVD and shows like Mag7, Now and Again and Brisco County (to randomly pick from my wish list) are nowhere in sight. It's a mean world sometimes.

possibly a sequel to come

Ooh, I hope so. I'm a big fan of her fic anyway (she writes RGB, and well. That's rare, trust me), and this was a good one. I do like this pairing, I have to admit.

I'm not really sure what Varese is up to with the League soundtrack. I like Trevor Jones' work, so I might be inclined to get the CD anyway, but in my experience most people (the ones who don't normally buy soundtracks at least) buy soundtracks because they've just walked out of the movie and are on a movie-high. But I wonder how many copies they'll sell if they're hoping people will like the music so much they'll make an extra effort to track it down.

Brisco!! Oh, how I love that show. I want that and Wild Wild West on DVD, and a score of others as well.

I like her fic as well, it seems she always turns up in my fandoms :) I was beginning to despair of anyone writing good Jack/Bootstrap, so this makes me very happy indeed.

Speaking of good RGB fic, have you read anything by Robyn and Mara? They write excellent gen and slash (I particularly recommend Robyn's slash series). You can find their site here (http://oplnk.net/~mara/home.htm). Also be sure to check out Robyn's gen story of how the boys met at Columbia; it's my favorite version.

That does seem a risky way to sell a CD. Most people don't want to go to that much trouble. They're really going to lose that "impulse buy" thing this way.

Btw, love your gay pants icon! Too cool :)

Ooh, WWW DVDs. That would be nice. I have a little VHS boxed set, but that only gives me three episodes to watch over and over, which is kind of sad. It has a slightly better chance of being released than some of the others on my wish list, though, since it's considered a classic. Or at least that's what I tell myself. *g* Fingers crossed!

I know what you mean. I've been wading through mountains of Jack/Will fic (a lot of it... not good) hunting for the rare Jack/Bootstrap or Jack/Norrington, and after a while it gets depressing. Darn that Orli and his pretty puppy eyes.

I love Robyn and Mara's fic- it was comfort reading for me my first year at grad school (once I got past the "ahhh! my childhood memories!" thing, which took, oh, 30 seconds). The gen stuff is so smarmy that I can't help but read it as pre-slash. I also really like Lethe Kelly's stuff, but her page seems to have vanished (I think she's still in the RGBSA at least). I haven't reread them in a while though,so good thing you reminded me. Seems to be time to go back and wallow for a bit.

Re the gay Wooster pants- all [livejournal.com profile] tzikeh again, of course. Isn't it cute? I hadn't even finished hamster-dancing over the Brimstone one when this one showed up. Bertie just looks so goofy.

I think I have that same VHS box set - the pilot and two other black & white eps? I have a couple dozen other episodes taped, back from when it was shown on TNT, but I'd love to have all the uncut eps on DVD.

Oh yes! I'd almost forgotten about Lethe's work. I've always liked it, but it's been offline for so long. Robyn's stories were some of the first slash I admitted I liked :)

Bertie does indeed look goofy. All part of his charm :) His golfing pants would make a good gay pants icon as well.

I keep hoping TPTB will look at the fact that it still has a devoted fanbase, even though it's been gone for years, and think, "Hey, let's take advantage of this." No luck yet, but you never know, right?
