... because I wish I'd said it first. From the Bad Movie Planet boards, re: Pirates of the Caribbean:

I also can't help but think Mr. Rush is the logical successor to Vincent Price, and yes, I do mean that as a very high compliment. - Prankster

Very true. He might be more highly regarded than Mr. Price, thanks to films like Elizabeth (rightly) and Shine (less so, in my eyes), but he still has that Dr. Phibes/Roderick Usher/Francois Delambre impulse and ability in him. He even did an homage in the remake of House on Haunted Hill, doing the part Vincent Price had played (a character now renamed Price) and taking on some of his mannerisms. Best part of that thing, too.

(If I ruled the universe, Vincent Price would be remembered as more than the host of "Mystery," the narrator of "Thriller," and the "father" of Edward Scissorhands. He made some wonderful movies in his career, like Laura, Leave Her to Heaven, and yes, The Abominable Dr. Phibes [no, really, it is impressive], and he was wonderful in some terrible movies, like all those wretched things based on Poe. Plus, he was classy, he knew and loved art, and he was a gourmet. I cried when he died.)

And let's not forget that Vincent did a guest-voice role in a Chuck Jones Bugs Bunny cartoon ("Water, Water Everywhere" playing an Eeeeevil Scientist), was immortalized as a muppet on Sesame Street (Vincent Twice, Vincent Twice) and was hysterically funny as a guest star on The Muppet Show.

That episode of The Muppet Show is one of my favorites- one of these days I'm just going to have to say "Hang the expense!" and buy the DVDs. Vincent Twice, Vincent Twice was another fave, although I bet kids today wouldn't get him (not that it would matter, since Elmo rules the show so completely there's little room for most of the other Muppets). But "Water, Water Everywhere" I've never seen, unfortunately. I wish more Chuck Jones cartoons were available on DVD- it seems a shame that people rarely, if ever, get to see many of them.

Gah! I mistyped that--it's actually "Water, Water Every Hare," from 1952. It's a sort of remake/sequel to 1946's "Hair Raising Hare" which featured a Peter Lorre-ish mad scientist. Both cartoons also featured the large, hairy, tennis shoe wearing monster who was much later christened Gossamer. They and a lot of other great (and no so great) WB cartoons turn up on The Cartoon Network --look specifically for the "Chuck Jones Show" on Sunday nights.

Ooh, Gossamer. I love him. Darn it, I can't believe I've never seen this one. But alas, I don't have cable and am forced to live a Cartoon Network-free life (which is painful, trust me). Maybe I'll bribe my sister to keep an eye out and and tape it for me.
