Not dead. Not ignoring anyone. Not even busy, in fact. Just being held hostage by a computer so evil it makes Karl Rove look like Mary Poppins (actually, Ms. Poppins was a little evil, but in that vaguely kinky obey-nanny-or-else way. Or maybe I just wasn't a rule-abiding child.) It obviously doesn't care how deeply addicted I am to LJ, fic, my various comic book/action figure/film geek sites, etc. My computer doesn't love me anymore. Wah!

Anyway, my question. Does anyone know anything about the plot of the upcoming Aubrey/Maturin movie? Because the full title is Master and Commander: The Far of the World, right? Except those are two different books, from opposite ends of the series (well, the beginning and the middle, anyway). So do we get to see the "relationship beginnings/ fights with the Spanish and French/ Jack is barely on the ladder of rank yet" storyline from Master and Commander, or do we get to see the "established relationship/ Stephen's deep into espionage/ Jack's still on his way up/ War of 1812" plotline of Far Side of the World? Or a mishmash, or something from whole cloth just for the movies?

Aaand... it looks like Gozer (the evil computer, natch) wants to crash again, so I guess anything else I wanted to say will have to wait. Stupid computer, I haven't had my LJ fix yet! You toy with me, cruel machine.

They've been so secretive about the plot for M&C, so I'm not sure what it's about or when it's set or anything. IMDB sums up the plot with "Ship Surgeon Stephen Maturin (Bettany) and Navy Capt. Jack Aubrey (Crowe) sail out to see the richness and strangeness of life on the far side of the world, against the backdrop of Napoleonic Wars."

Not much to go on. The trailer is up now at the official site (http://www.masterandcommanderthefarsideoftheworld.com/index1.html), but it doesn't really reveal much either.

I'm dying to see this movie. I adore Jack and Stephen, and I really hope they do this right.

I knew you'd know something about it, if anyone did. Gee, that's a really unhelpful summary from IMDB. That could be, like, most of the series right there. I can't watch the trailer, unfortunately- I've tried downloading it three times now (slooooooowly, since I have the slowest connection on earth), and three times now it's crashed me. My computer really has a thing about video. Oh well.

I'm both really excited and really nervous about this movie. I love Jack and Stephen, and I'd love to see them done well, but there's always the chance that it'll go horribly wrong. And I'm not sure about the casting- the longer I think about it, the less I mind that Crowe and Bettany don't seem much like my Jack and Stephen, and anyway I like both actors. So I'm cautiously optimistic. If nothing else, there'll be pretty ships and Billy Boyd, right?

Aw, bummer about the trailer, but really you're not missing anything of detail. Mostly a lot of dark shots of the ship in a storm, shots of sea battle stuff (looks good, so at least the cinematography shouldn't disappoint), and Jack. I honestly couldn't spot Stephen in the dashed thing.

I'm nervous about the casting, too. Russell Crowe isn't my idea of Jack - he might get the temperament right, but he's too short. I've never seen Bettany in anything, so I can't really judge, but he looks the part ok, I guess. As long as they have good chemistry I'll be happy :)

Good point, though. Ships, cannons, and Billy Boyd. That'll be enough to keep me entertained *g* And I'm really curious to see how they include the music!

Re Russell- too short and too dour, at least in recent years. I wonder if anyone in Hollywood remembers he used to comedies too? I loved Paul Bettany in A Knight's Tale, but I haven't seen him in anything else, and Stephen's no Chaucer. I know Russell and Paul are friends in real life, though, and I find that reassuring, chemistry-wise. And I'm really curious how they'll include the music, too. We don't get a lot of quiet scenes in adventure movies these days, but it'll be disappointing if they ignore that element entirely.

Aw, now I don't want to wait for November! Serves me right for trying to reorganize my bookshelves- I had pushed the movie to the back of my mind until then.

That's right, weren't they in A Beautiful Mind together? If they're good chums, then I feel a bit better about all of it :)

Well, I think we can guarantee that they won't ignore the music entirely. I remember articles saying Russell and Paul were having to learn to play the violin and cello for the roles. So, evidently it'll really be them playing!

I'm impatient for this, too. I hate waiting!

Hee! For some reason I find the image of them having music lessons very cute. They have to stay in and practice while all the other actors get to go out and play with swords- no fair! Mommmm! (can you tell I took piano and hated to practice?)

I keep forgetting to mention how much I like that new icon. It makes me smile every time I see it.

lol. What a cute image. I do hope we get scenes of them sitting in the captain's cabin, playing some lovely duet.

Thanks! I thought it was about time I had a ship icon.
