You know, I'm not a fan of the whole "season finale in April" thing. One more episode? Maybe ever? Hmph. It's one thing when the CBC does it, but CBS? You don't get a pass. I'm miffed.

David Marciano is Helen's rapist?! Ack! Not Ray! My brain, she explodes! Wow, that was startling casting. And he's a great actor and did a good job, but... wow. Baggage.

I still love Helen, though (and I love Helen and Will. I was so glad when Lucy finally buggered off. Euch, painful plotline). Mary S. just played that scene so effectively. The show may not be what it was last season overall, but it still has moments. I'm glad I didn't give up on it. I need to watch the whole thing again, I think, and see how it holds together.

Also, new Christopher Wey guy? Creepy. Very creepy. Particularly with "Sympathy for the Devil" playing while Joan and Adam look at the drawing of him. Dum dum dum. Actually, I thought that was one of the more interesting soundtrack choices we've heard in a while, considering that we won't know how it'll play out until next week (if then). Is it a heavy-handed hint or a red herring? A comment from the omnipotent narrator or a glimpse into Joan's own (possibly mistaken) psyche? We'll see, I guess. Plus I just like the song. Heh.

There were a lot of continuity threads well strummed in this episode, which was nice. This show used to be so good at that, but at least they haven't totally lost the knack. Helen's rape, Mrs. Rove's suicide, Mrs. Polonsky's alcoholism, the ripple metaphor... some were focused upon and some just glanced at, but they were there. And that's a start. Too bad it comes at the end.

And Mr. Rove still exists! Nice to see him again, however briefly. Too bad we probably won't get to see him or the rabbi or Father Ken or Sammy (either Sammy) or any of the other great recurring characters next week.

I had serious doubts about midway through the season, but in the end, I really will miss this show, I think. It stumbled this season and nearly fell, but if it did get renewed, I'd watch. I still love these characters enough, have enough interest in the concept, and am deeply hooked by enough scenes not to want to lose it. It might not break my heart if it doesn't return, but I will definitely regret it deeply.
