The quest for the holy art paper was, sadly, a wash. Castle Anthrax had all the wrong shades of blue and a wealth of truly hideous patterns. It was not to be borne. So I shall farewell my lost companions, and embark once more upon this greatest of adventures. The paper shall be mine! Huzzah!

I did buy a nice travel memoir, though. Summer Light: A Walk Across Norway, by Andrew Stevenson. The bits I've read so far have been good, and I love Norway, but it was a slightly odd choice, since the travel books I buy in the winter almost always involve deserts or jungles. Scandinavia, not so much; it's too much like home. It must have been the cheerful yellow cover that lured me in this time. Just like a bug. Now watch the book devour me in the night.

Snarkily fun story rec: a Joan of Arcadia/House crossover from [livejournal.com profile] suzvoy, Hallowed Be Thy Greg (vague spoilers for Joan S2, nothing really for House). Heh. I imagine the combined snark of Joan and Dr. Greg House could level armies, and I shudder to think what House and Grace could get up to. Yikes. If you're not watching House, you should try it while you can- it's on Tuesdays at 9 on FOX, so every week could be our last. The show itself is structured more or less along standard doctor/lawyer/cop show lines- "I have the answer!" "No, you don't, we have forty minutes left." "Okay, now I have the answer!" "Nope, twenty minutes left." "Right. Now I have the answer!" "You do! Brilliant! Hugs and/or tears for everyone!" TPTB do ring small changes on the formula, but really, it's the characters that make the show worthwhile. Not so much House's trio of baby genius sidekicks, though they're slowly gaining shadows and possibilities, or even his frustrated, frustrating boss, Bobbi Bernstein, er, Dr. Cuddy. She has great potential for good or evil, but the bones have not yet been cast. Nope, personally I watch it for House and his colleague/best friend/true love/humanizing element, Dr. James Wilson, aka the ever-wonderful Hugh Laurie and my long-time love, Robert Sean Leonard. Theirs is a relationship of sniping and devotion, and they're so cute. So extremely cute that they're tap-dancing all over my infidelity squick and getting away with it. I certainly wouldn't want House as my doctor, but it's great fun watching him terrorize (and heal) other people. Now if only the show weren't on FOX...

Speaking of long-time loves, I finally got around to listening to Tears for Fears' new album. Now, they were my favorite group for years (hush) and they're still one of my best beloveds (I said hush), so I was really just putting off playing Everybody Loves A Happy Ending because I'm a big chicken. What if it were terrible? What if it were boring? What if they sounded old? Happily all is well and I like it. A third of the songs sound like "hey, we're middle-aged now!" tunes (which is fine), another third sound like the "Woman in Chains"/"Swords and Knives"/"Famous Last Words" sort of thing from Seeds of Love (which is great), and the last third sound like Skylarking-era XTC. Which is freaky as hell, but in a good way.

(Nicked from [livejournal.com profile] cliosfolly). Ha! Hael to the king, baby! Well, I have the pride and the loyalty covered, I suppose. But I don't usually go around swimming across oceans and tearing off arms. Then again, the subject hasn't really come up yet.

You scored as Beowulf. Heroic, strong, and maybe a little on the proud side--not that you don't have a reason to be. After all, you defeat THREE major evils that ravage the countryside as well as many minor beasties that get in the way before you're done in. You simply don't give up. Without you, Hrothgar's Golden Hall would still stand empty.

No hushes here. While they were never my favorite band, "The Hurting" was (and still is) one of my all-time favorite albums.

Oh yes. That's one of the select group of albums I've bought in three formats, and will no doubt buy again when they come up with the CD's replacement (not any time soon, though, I hope. Slow down, tech guys!). It's nice that Gary Jules has had a big hit with "Mad World" and all, but there's no replacing the original, IMO.
