ealgyldenI would never scoff at Cirque du Soleil's athleticism. Goodness knows I'd damage myself in short order if I tried to emulate one of their hamster-wheel acrobats or "look, Ma! No bones!" contortionists. The music they use almost always appeals to me, and I like the fact that their shows try to have some sort of plot, though if you come in halfway through, like I did tonight, good luck figuring it out (the red guy and the silver guy didn't get along, I got that much). There was an act in their 20th anniversary show a while back that had fiercely attractive people flinging around a variety of flaming things and managing not to light themselves on fire while dancing to a catchy Afropop rhythm, and it was so terribly cool I wish I'd taped just that bit. Overall, I'd put Cirque du Soleil in the "often strange but still keen" column. And yet... what is with the costumes, guys? I know that they practice and practice and have a ton of precautionary measures and safeguards in place, but there's still that tiny chance that someone will go splat off the trapeze. And would you want to die looking like an extra from "The Littlest Gladiator Goes to the Ballet"? Or the next full moon's sacrifice to the Ribbon God? Or a kiwi fruit with purple legs? Yeah, me neither. That's the reason I've always said "I'm running away to become a blues musician" rather than "I'm running away to join the circus"- if you go the three-ring route, the PETA people will hound you to madness, and if you join up with the French Canadians, they'll twist you into balloon animal poses while dressing you in a latex fanatic's absinthe-and-Pixy-Stix-fuelled nightmare. One has to really want that sort of job, I imagine. It wouldn't work well as a casual goal.
Anyway, the exciting DVD news, nicked from DavisDVD:
Playwright Tom Stoppard's Rosencrantz & Guildenstern are Dead is finally making its Region 1 DVD debut from Image Entertainment. The 1990 film, a clever twist on Shakespeare's Hamlet told from the perspective of the two witless supporting players, arrives on March 22nd with a 1.85:1 anamorphic transfer, Dolby Digital stereo audio and extensive interviews with Stoppard and stars Gary Oldman, Tim Roth and Richard Dreyfuss. Retail is $24.99.
Joy! Joy and exultation! It shall be mine, oh yes, it shall be mine! Squeeeeeeeeee! I've been waiting and waiting and waiting... at last!
And I found this very amusing. Look at the sorts of prices press kits for The Librarian are fetching on eBay: $66. Another one at $66. $54. This one's a relative steal at $20, but it still has five days to go and will probably climb right up there. See, there are people with less willpower than I have. Or more money, anyway. Not that I'd bid if I had a spare sixty bucks. Um. I was searching for something completely different at the time. Totally accidental find, I swear.
I had thought to catch up on comments and such tonight, too, but tomorrow might be a better bet if I want to make sense ("why start now?" badum ching).
