Yay, you posted it! And it's awesome! If it's possible to be rolling around on the floor lmao, and nodding my head off saying "Yes, oh yes! Exactly!" and "I was wondering about that, too!"...then I've just done it. I think I'll need to go lie down.
This episode leapt right onto my list of Favorites Pilot Episodes Ever, beside such worthies as the pilots of Invisible Man, Angel, West Wing, Homicide and the rest.
Dude, I so agree. Amazing pilot. I was fascinated and creeped out and it had my brain firing on all cylinders. That's good television, that.
Great first sequence. Creepily atmospheric and intriguing, plus the washed-out colors and slightly overexposed look reminded me of Brimstone, always a good thing in my book.
I love this, too. I saw it in Gwyn's vid first, so I was expecting it, but that didn't take away from the coolness.
I love that you've got a good background in paranormal type stuff! I don't know much at all, really (although I should, what with fandoms like RGB and X-Files, and now Miracles. I should research more.), so it's nice to have someone to catch all these little things.
How does one go about becoming a miracle investigator anyway?
Good question. Did they just make up the job for the show, or is this really something churches or other organizations do? You're right, Paul does seem to know something about forensics, but I'm not sure where he'd acquire such knowledge. If he was a seminarian, that should have included classes on therapy and counseling and such (though you're right again, Paul can forget that when he feels like being a jerk). I wonder how far he got in the seminary before...quitting? Going another route but still within the church? We don't really know why he quit, do we?
Alva wants him (on the team) because he's "a good investigator," but where did he learn to be one (never mind how Alva even knows that he is)?
I get the feeling Alva has stalked him for quite a while. Ever since that woman drew a picture of him and had that dream and he was able to track him down. He knows about his skills because he's always watching :)
And then we get our first glimpse of Alva in his car, merrily stalking Paul. Awww. Why now? I mean, his timing is strangely convenient for catching Paul on the rebound, unless he normally follows him on his rounds ("Monday: investigate bleeding walls in Scituate; Tuesday: stalk Paul; Wednesday: interview couple in Middlebury; Thursday: stalk Paul...").
Heeeee! I'd agree with "normally follows him on his rounds". I think Alva has been in the background for a long time without Paul knowing it. He's trying to work up the courage to ask him out ;)
Only of course it isn't Poppi, so who's on the phone and why? Paul's vulnerable and searching, but who's taking advantage of that here?
Oh man, I hadn't thought of that. In a way, it's Good, b/c it lets Paul meet Alva (and we all know why that's a good thing, 'natch); it also hooks him up with Tommy, who makes it possible for Paul to save Matty later on, so that's ultimately Good, too. But it's also possibly Bad, b/c Tommy dies, Paul is started on the Path of Many Head Wounds, Paul starts thinking he himself might be evil...it goes on. So, it could be God, or it could be John Glover. I have no idea, and I'm not sure which one I'd even want it to be.
Paul's social skills are... uneven...when it comes to pretty, young women, the overtones tend to be brotherly (Evie, Georgia), dorky (Formerly Blind Girl, Raina Bauer) or creepy and mean (Rebecca, Debbie). There are dark places in his nerdy brain, that's certain.
God, yes. I know we've discussed this before, but Paul around women creeps me out. It's just not a good thing, usually. Those underlying tendencies of jealousy and possessiveness we saw in "You Are My Sunshine" tarnished our possible White Knight into quite the Black Knight. Now, supposedly the Black Knight always triumphs (ok, Monty Python quotes might not be applicable here, but go with me), but they also often work for themselves rather than for a specific "side" or "cause". Are they Good? Evil? Hard to tell, and it's hard to tell with Paul as well.
