I meant to pick on the SyFy Portal Genre Awards nominations when they came out on Saturday night, but it slipped my mind. No time like the present! My biggest issue with them is that Enterprise leads the pack with 13 nods. Not Farscape, not Firefly, not even Buffy. Enterprise? Well I'm boggled, I must say.

BEST ACTOR/Television
Scott Bakula, Enterprise Scotty. Dear. I've loved you for years, but Archer is a bore. And occasionally a boor. Feh.
David Boreanaz, Angel
Ben Browder, Farscape
Nathan Fillion, Firefly Yaaaay!
Anthony Michael Hall, The Dead Zone

BEST ACTRESS/Television
Claudia Black, Farscape Yay!
Jolene Blalock, Enterprise She has improved this season. Boy do they stick her with lousy writing though.
Jennifer Garner, Alias
Sarah Michelle Gellar, Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Jewel Staite, Firefly Yaaaay! And as a Lead Actress no less! Go Jewel!

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR/Television This category would be tough for me to vote in- it's pretty strong, if not particularly surprising. Except where are Adam Baldwin and Sean Maher? Oh, and Alan Tudyk. Darn, too many good actors.
John Billingsley, Enterprise
Alexis Denisof, Angel
Anthony Stewart Head, Buffy the Vampire Slayer
James Marsters, Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Connor Trinneer, Enterprise Whatever. Nothing against Trinneer, but if I never see another Trip-related plotline again, it'll be too soon. I am so tired of him.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS/Television Another strong group, although the way some of these characters have been written this year hasn't lived up to the talents of the actresses. Oh well.
Emma Caulfield, Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Gigi Edgley, Farscape
Alyson Hannigan, Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Allison Meek, Smallville Who? At least get her name right, guys.
Linda Park, Enterprise Yay Hoshi!

BEST ACTOR/Movie
Tom Cruise, Minority Report Good lord, the troll doll was nominated.
Ewan McGregor, Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones "For excellence in restraining himself from yelling 'Get me out of the movie! Help! Help!'"
Ian McKellen, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
Viggo Mortensen, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
Patrick Stewart, Star Trek: Nemesis

BEST ACTRESS/Movie This category is so, so weak. Painfully so.
Jennifer Garner, Daredevil Hahahahahahahaha! Wait, they're serious?
Samantha Morton, Minority Report
Natalie Portman, Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones Remember when Natalie Portman could act? I miss those days.
Marina Sirtis, Star Trek: Nemesis
Liv Tyler, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers My choice by default, I guess. But I actually like Liv's Arwen quite a bit. I know, I know.

BEST YOUNG ACTOR
Rory Culkin, Signs
Summer Glau, Firefly Yaaaaay! Interesting that Summer was nominated here and Jewel in Best Actress, since they're so close in age. I wonder how old "young" is.
Vincent Kartheiser, Angel
Daniel Radcliffe, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
Michelle Trachtenberg, Buffy the Vampire Slayer

BEST SPECIAL GUEST/Television
Jeffrey Combs, "Cease Fire," Enterprise
Bruce Davison, "The Seventh," Enterprise
Juliet Landau, "Lies My Parents Told Me," Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Christopher Reeve, "Rosetta," Smallville
Dean Stockwell, "Detained," Enterprise Wasn't this a first season ep? I wonder what the cut-off date is.

BEST EPISODE/Television The category I agree with least. No Firefly, no Farscape, no Angel, three (!) indifferent Enterprises, and two not bad/not great Buffys.
Carbon Creek, Enterprise Why is this episode so popular with nominating committees? It was okay, but it wasn't even a smidge as good as "Dead Stop" or "Minefield".
Cease Fire, Enterprise
Conversations With Dead People, Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Lies My Parents Told Me, Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Stigma, Enterprise

BEST THEME SONG/Television Always one of my favorite categories.
Angel Old fave
Buffy the Vampire Slayer Old, slightly less fave
Enterprise Hahahahahahhaha! Stop, you're killing me!
Farscape
Firefly New fave, and my pick. I want Angel and Firefly CDs!

BEST SERIES/Television Hey, where's Firefly? Cancelled halfway through the first season, you say? Well damn.
Angel
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Enterprise
Farscape
Smallville

BEST MOVIE Betcha can't guess what I'd pick!
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
Minority Report
Signs
Spider-Man
Star Trek: Nemesis

GENE RODDENBERRY LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
Jonathan Frakes (actor/director)
Peter Jackson (director)
Ronald D. Moore (writer/producer)
Patrick Stewart (actor)
J.R.R. Tolkien (author) "Lifetime" doesn't necessarily mean "alive" then.
Joss Whedon (writer/director)

Not a great year for genre media, overall. Some high points, but mostly it's been a long list of "cancelled, cancelled, in its last season, cancelled" with occasional forays into "consistent (consistently dull, that is)".
