Hee! For some odd reason, I thought of you when I read the bit on the cannons. Can't imagine why. ;) And I've never heard "play the ink" either. Maybe "play the stuff that I just finished writing and the ink isn't dry yet"? Except that he only wrote changes on his own copy and conveyed them verbally to the orchestra... I have no idea. Oh well.
