I do not understand all the people who think he's boring and cardboard, or worse, evil. He is a sweetie, if a bit uptight.
Evil? People actually think he's evil? I've heard a lot of the boring thing (which I really don't get, but okay, people are strange), but where are they getting evil from? He's a good leader to his men, is generally tolerant and polite to people he doesn't quite like (like Will), chooses his duty over vendettas or personal ambition (yeah, he's choosing not to chase Barbossa, who's a legitimate baddie, but it could easily have been Jack in Barbossa's place). He's unfailingly respectful and gentlemanly toward Elizabeth. He cares enough for her that he releases her from their engagement without a protest! How is any of that evil? Those people are crazy. Or very, very young.
I love how into the "Look at how PIRATICAL I am!" Barbossa is.
Ha! That's just how he is. Why be a cursed pirate if you can't revel in the occasional "arrrrr" or chance to scary the pretty girl? I know I would.
Jack's got pretty good skin, too. Maybe the alcohol acts as a preservative.
Ah ha, they're pickled so they stay fresher. That explains when Jack looks so much younger than his contemporaries. Danke. *g*
I believe 'Davy Jones' locker" is also anachronistic in this case.
Is it? It makes me twitch to hear it, so I've never bothered to do any research on its origins. That's even more annoying then- anachronistic (though I don't mind anachronisms if they're fun) and just plain irritating. Feh.
I think habit. Like when Elizabeth dumps hot coals on Ragetti, and he goes argh ow, he stops right away when Pintel basically says "Stop being an idiot, you know it doesn't hurt."
Ah, you're right, I'd forgotten that moment. I imagine it would take a while to get out of the habit of expecting wounds to hurt, since that's such a basic, hardwired response. Once they had a moment to process, they'd remember they no longer can be hurt, but that first "owww!" would already be yelled. Yeah, that makes sense, I think.
