Yeah, they didn't and they were, which is sad. They stopped talking when they started dating (or rather, they stopped just talking and started having big, dramatic scenes). If they'd found some way to keep their friendship while deepening it, it might have worked, but instead they tried to squeeze themselves into the "right" roles and live up to romantic ideals. The whole "crazy camp" thing got them off to a bad start, too, I suppose, and it's all just so frustrating. Pretty accurate for a swoony high school romance, but that doesn't make it any less painful to watch.
